Nest in the Wind free essay sample

She got involved in their culture and community. She even , though unwanted gained rank in their society. Her and Her Husband lived in a tin hut, learned customs and manners. They were forced to do the daily chores , find food learn the language and be an active part of the community When the first arrived they had little idea what to expect. They went for information and what they got was a life changing experience. Their study Is one of the few done on the traditional way of Opined life recording everything from chores to beliefs. One Major belief in Opined is sorcery.During her visit to the Island, Martha Ward and her husband hear many traditions and beliefs. One of these beliefs Is sorcery. In Opined they believe that Jealousy or greed towards others was the same as sending a curse(ward 2005). Opined is a society in which cooperation and being humble are key values of life. The Islander are still human though . They believe that hidden feelings are causes of bad fortune. The author claims scientifically she can not prove the were the victims of sorcery but the most problems including stepping on toads, goings items. And nightmares all occurred at this time. Its was believed that Soon Lapel threw feast to rid the two of the curses but he never spoke of it. Martha Ward He says he was too good of a Christian which at the time didnt believe in witch craft . I believe that the author was probably exposed to a type of cold she had never got before and probably didnt build up an immunity too. All the other events and mishaps were Just coincidental. Many societies believe that Jealousy and greed will lead to misfortunes. This show s that unity Is a very Important part of the Opined ultra. The unity and the respect required for the feast makes it effective in getting rid of the curse .During Soon Lapels funeral we can see how Pensions value the connection of the tribe_One example of this Is the women of Soon lapels [Marriages] and women in the families he created Prepared his body for burial. (Ward 2005) . This is also seen in how the men prepare for funerals. men brought food prepared the earth oven and pounding kava (Ward 2005). It is very clear that the Bohemians had close social bonds in their families and communities. Every vent Joyful or tragic was solved and celebrated by much of the community. One thing all these celebration had in common was a drink called Kava.Kava plays a very important role for traditional inhabitants of Opined . Kava is used to bring peace to this Island. Although Christianity has denounced the uses of kava those who have converted do take part In the ceremonies but may not drink the fluid. One reason People of Opined drink kava is It is said that if you drink kava you can no longer be mad (Ward 2005) . Kava was used many times in the book. Often it was y accident, two men ran out side and grabbed a kava root and pounded it offering it to the chief. This was a sign of remorse and like a peace treaty. The chief drank the Kava and forgave the speaker. The Essay Assignment: What is the role of Kava on the island of Opined? How does the author describe the processing and use of Kava in different social situations? Does she and her husband use Kava and does it do the same thing for them as for the other Bohemians? How is the Kava ritual important in building relationships and social standing? What are the preferences between kava in capsule form sold in health food stores and the kava found on the island? What accounts of these differences? What does this tell us about the role of culture, especially in teems of ritual, exchange, and social relations? In 30 years the Culture of Bohemians has changes significantly . After Martha Ward had left the island much changed. One of the biggest cha nges was that the Island was now part of a nation and a government recognized by the United States. Another change in Opening culture was in their relations ships. One example of this is quoted Dating customs were changing. Young Couples hold hands and eat together in public (Ward 2005). When Martha Ward visited the Island couples would go out of their way to show no public relation let alone affection. They tried so much not to even make contact with one another. The reason for this change was young people visiting other civilizations and seeing these actions in such places as movies and bars. The culture of children changed Just as much as the adults. When Martha Ward was first at the Island the children where running around wearing almost nothing . She describes a child in her return trip thirty years later as Jesse wore baggy pants that hung down to reveal his underwear a muscle shirt and arm bands like urban gang members(Ward 2005). On her return trip the author note that there was schools, playgrounds, a college and even a wall mart now located on the Island.Even though the Bohemians appear to be a victim of westernizes there are some traditions that still persisted. One of the aspects of life that didnt change with time is the same themes of respect for tradition and high people , cooperation , redistribution , prestige striving and conspicuous consumption remained ITIL (Ward 2005). Although the Island had added roads and buildings There was no signs , no systems of controlling flies or odors and no more regular supplies of fresh produce(Ward 2005) . Kava gathering and feast will still see as big parts of life. Opening still offered little tourist attractions though. There was no shopping or organized entertainment. Although for those who would be more familiar with traditional customs on the Islands they still have feast with giants yams ,cultural dances and kava. Bohemians even kept the tradition of lifting up a child (Ward 005) or adopting them . Ranks are still also seen on the island. It is said Another example of the genius of Opening culture in keeping alive tradition systems by incorporating new elements (Ward 2005).One example of this would be the Kava plant. Kava still tasted like slimy mud and kava bars had sprung up where one could buy a cup or bottle. (Ward 2005). The Bohemians took their natural resource kava and still use it for their traditional spiritual practices. Along with this they have be bough in bars around the Island. Although unlike thirty years in the past the pounding of kava is now regulated with health standards. Also the stores owned by the Islanders and seen as social investments not financial ones.Through the store they can become better people. The blood pressure experiment on the Island was a failure in my opinion. One Pompeii is quoted to say Im a borderline diabetic I went to Manila for a hysterectomy I used to weight bass I lost weight And got a D-l-V-O-R-C-E(Ward 2005). The blood pressure experiment did not prevent high blood pressure. In fact the integration of those westerns who were less then serious bout the project may have added to it. When Ward originally came to the Island blood pressure was relativity low for the Islanders. It was thirty years later after they westernizes that dieses such as diabetes occurred. Also the blood pressure project was never really finished the only recorded of diet and health on the Island where through Wards notes. Since the Project was not completed it never led to the answer of why the Bohemians truly had lower blood pressure, when it started to rise and how fast it did. I think the information would have been more useful if they would eve completed it and if they had data for the thirty years in which it grew along with lifestyle changes. It is very clear that the modernization of the once tropical paradise and the change in the diets of the people had a huge correlating effect on their blood pressure. I think that the researchers where ethnically bound to publish their finding to the Bohemians and the people who funded this projects. I dont think that it necessarily had to be publicly published but it would have certainly aided in helping future projects and experiments on the island be more accurate.

Lutheran And Protestantism Essay Research Paper GermanyLutheran free essay sample

Lutheran And Protestantism Essay, Research Paper Germany Lutheran and Protestantism In 1517, an Augustinian mendicant named Martin Luther succeeded in individual handedly disputing many otherwise by and large accepted positions of faith in Europe. With small more in head than publishing a challenge in the signifier of a argument to anyone who believed in the system of Indulgences presented by Tetzel, Luther managed to arouse a long in the doing rebellion against the Catholic Church. Indulgences were a type of fundraiser of the Church? s that consisted of a adult male named Tetzel offering the rich an chance to purchase their manner into Eden and even purchase their dead loved 1s? salvation. Luther? s Ninety-five Thesiss ( his written out statement ) which he posted on a church door in Wittenburg became a symbol of the general symbol of the discontent in Germany with the Church and the overall state of affairs of things. Brought before the Diet of Worms, Luther maintained his controversial views and was judged and outlaw but managed to escape the law with the help of friends and continue his writing and through it convert many, called Lutherans, to his views. Though not his intent, in time this led to a revolt of the peasants in 1524, spurned by his teachings. The peasants were easily crushed and control still belonged to the princes. Many cities converted to Lutheran, but those that stayed Catholic tried to force the others back to their way of thinking and when the Lutherans protested they became ?Protestants? and the name became one to describe anyone who broke away from Catholicism. Resulting from all this, many new churches were formed and the Catholic Church is no longer the only one in all of Western Europe as it had been for 1000 years.

Dorothea Dix Quotes

Dorothea Dix Quotes Dorothea Dix, an activist who served in the Civil War as Superintendent of Female Nurses, also worked for reform of treatment for the mentally ill. Selected Dorothea Dix Quotes I think even lying on my bed I can still do something. [attributed, possibly incorrectly] The tapestry of history has no point at which you can cut it and leave the design intelligible. In a world where there is so much to be done, I felt strongly impressed that there must be something for me to do.   I come to present the strong claims of suffering humanity. I come to place before the Legislature of Massachusetts the condition of the miserable, the desolate, the outcast. I come as the advocate of helpless, forgotten, insane men and women; of beings sunk to a condition from which the unconcerned world would start with real horror. Society, during the last hundred years, has been alternately perplexed and encouraged, respecting the two great questions - how shall the criminal and pauper be disposed of, in order to reduce crime and reform the criminal on the one hand, and, on the other, to diminish pauperism and restore the pauper to useful citizenship? [Remarks on Prisons and Prison Discipline in the United States]   Moderate employment, moderate exercise, as much freedom as is consistent with the safety of the patient, and as little apparent anxious watchfulness with cheerful society should be sought.   This sentiment of satisfaction in being useful, the guardian of the insane cannot too carefully watch over and foster since it conducts to self-control and self-respect. Incurables who are able and willing to work, are much more contented and enjoy better health when employed. If County Jails must be resorted to for security against the dangerous propensities of madmen, let such use of prison-rooms and dungeons be but temporary.   I admit that public peace and security are seriously endangered by the non-restraint of the maniacal insane. I consider it in the highest degree improper that they should be allowed to range the towns and country without care or guidance; but this does not justify the public in any State or community, under any circumstances or conditions, in committing the insane to prisons; in a majority of cases the rich may be, or are sent to Hospitals; the poor under the pressure of this calamity, have the same just claim upon the public treasury, as the rich have upon the private purse of their family as they have the need, so have they the right to share the benefits of Hospital treatment.   A man usually values that most for which he has labored; he uses that most frugally which he has toiled hour by hour and day by day to acquire. While we diminish the stimulant of fear, we must increase to prisoners the incitements of hope: in proportion as we extinguish the terrors of the law, we should awaken and strengthen the control of the conscience. [emphasis in original] Man is not made better by being degraded; he is seldom restrained from crime by harsh measures, except the principle of fear predominates in his character; and then he is never made radically better for its influence.

Symphony No 1 (Brahms Analysis) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Symphony No 1 (Brahms Analysis) - Essay Example The popularity and success of this Symphony are richly deserved. It is a work of perfect technical achievement and profound emotion, of beautiful melody and detailed counter point. The most important structural feature, and that is undoubtedly original with Brahms, is the acquisition of a short but striking phrase which introduces the exposition, and for which the phrase basic motive seems most appropriate, since it principals the entire movement, either as a component or as a generating factor. The themes are all based on it, or obtained from it. The subordinate Theme is, for scant measures, similar to the principal one: such a likeness between the chief themes has been frequently done before and is identified as one of the conditions of the early symphonic movement. The first codetta also shows remarkable likeness to the principal theme; the basic motive is set forth in the upper most tones, but the principal theme is given to the basses.... This introduction was composed after the remainder of the piece had already been scored. The allegro section of the movement is a huge orchestral sonata, wherein musical ideas are developed, clearly expressed and restated with changed relationships among them. The key of the allegretto is A-flat major. The allegretto starts with a tranquil, stepwise tune in the clarinet. The four bar figure experience an extension making it an asymmetrical five bars resulting from a small bridge between the phrases by the strings. The â€Å"A† theme in the allegretto is rounded off by the clarinet making the invasion of the first five bars audible. The B the infiltrates in m. 11 and then features a dropping dotted eighth pattern in the clarinet, bassoon, and flute with the falling arising figures of the rhythm being echoed by the strings. A appears to emerge with the violins repeating the first theme and a longer, chromatic bridge segment which lengthens the phrase composition to seven bars. D and C themes are different from A and B in the sense that they are more angular and shorter rhythmically. The first two themes are almost persistent eighth note pizzicato in the string. On the other hand, C and D have more complexity to the sixth note pattern that is interlocked accompanying the wind. The movement to F minor from the major mode marks the sections as apart from heralding material. The contrast that is obvious in mood and character can make someone to think of the D and C sections as a trio appearing within them first allegretto section in the greater ternary form shown by the whole movement (Wilson 137). The symmetry of the whole is reflected in the symmetry of each section. The A†

What Education Means to Me Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

What Education Means to Me - Essay Example Most students in high school are not sure what they want to be when they grow up. Often the lack of surety results in poor decisions and choices. In order to perform well in any job, it is critical to be passionate about it. One cannot be a good doctor if he really wants to be a writer. In my case, I always had a direction about what I wanted to pursue as my career although I did work in the marine infantry. In the marine, I was responsible for guarding the nuclear weapons which are amongst the most significant weapons. I always welcome the opportunity to learn as I believe one learns at every stage of his life. While working at the marine infantry I took the chance to learn more about the workings of the infantry. The experience proved to be invaluable although I showed more inclination towards radiation therapy. I did realize throughout school that education was of vital importance for my academic and professional development. It was my pathway to success. Although I found examinations to be intimidating I acknowledged that they were part of my educational development. But this did not mean that my view of education was limited to school, classes, and examinations. Education for me was beyond examinations and just school. The role of my teachers in motivating me has been great. This resulted in me looking at the world in a new perspective, one that was not confined to the classroom. Perhaps my teachers have had the greatest influence on my life in terms of education in school. They made me realize the importance of learning outside of the class. The ability to observe and apply knowledge to real situations was extremely helpful in building myself academically. Education is definitely beyond the usual textbook for me. It includes just about any knowledge or learning that results in a new perspective of viewing the world.

Nurse Anesthetists Essay Example for Free

Nurse Anesthetists Essay In a career in nursing, one must possess a need to help people, as well as the scientific and educational knowledge to perform the duties required. As I complete the final years of my high school education, I realize that I must focus on my goals and interests in order to make intelligent college curriculum decisions. I have always been considering a career in health, but the opportunities and diversification in the health field have perplexed me. I have always thought the job of a nurse anesthetist was extremely interesting, and it would be a great way to contribute to helping the lives of others. In the United States, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is simply an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who has acquired graduate-level education and board certification in anesthesia and they are the oldest nurse specialty group in the U. S. However, their job isn’t that simple. Anesthesia describes drugs and gases that help to block sensation, and they keep patients unconscious while in surgery. The main goal of the CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist), which is extremely important, is to have the patient awake free of pain. CRNAs, or Nurse Anesthetists, are responsible for administering, supervising, and monitoring anesthesia related care for those patients undergoing surgical procedures. Before the surgery, the CRNA obtains information regarding the patient’s medical history, evaluates the patient’s anesthesia needs, and develops a treatment plan with the goal of a risk-free and uncomplicated surgery. CRNA then explains the planned procedure to the patient, and answers any question that they may have. However, there are big steps that you have to take to become a CRNA. According to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), here is what you need to do to become a nurse anesthetist. All would-be nurse anesthetists must have an active registered nurse (RN) license, which requires a minimum of two years of study. Applicants to nurse anesthetist programs should have at least one year of work experience as an RN working in acute care, such as an intensive care unit. Once admitted to the Anesthesia program, the registered nurse must complete twenty-four to thirty-six months of classroom and clinical experience. A bachelors degree is the minimum required educational credential for certification as a nurse anesthetist. Many training programs are structured as masters degree programs, which always require a bachelors degree. Accredited Training Programs is the most important requirement to become a nurse anesthetist. Different programs have different specific requirements for application. Upon completion of the training program, prospective nurse anesthetists need to pass the certification examination offered by the Counsel on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists, and then maintain certification by regularly taking continuing educational units. Nurse anesthetists must obtain the appropriate licenses to practice in their state by contacting the state board of nursing for more information.
